New school year! New author study! New books! New literacies!
This school year we’ll study the books of Laurie Halse Anderson, winner
of the American Library Assoiciation’s 2009 Margaret A. Edwards Award
for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults . And we’ll cap
off the study when we meet with Laurie on April 26th – online and inworld
(live, interactive video stream and in Second Life).

Fever 1793, Laurie’s historical fiction title, will be our first book.
Join us on Monday, September 28th, at 8 pm EDT, in the Bookhenge
on USDLC's beautiful Star Island in Second Life to discuss the book.
Katie Moore, Carnage Middle School teacher, will share ideas for teaching new
literacies with this book that works great for interdisciplinary studies and
is unfortunately quite timely with the current threat of the H1N1 Virus. Katie
is also a graduate student at NC State University and a teacher blogger who
reviews YA novels and offers classroom applications at “Of the Heart,
Not the Glands” http://mutantangel.blogspot.com/
Be sure and read her
review of Laurie’s latest novel, Wintergirls.
Thanks to Simon & Schuster for donating ten copies of the book to our project.
These books will go to the first ten teachers who volunteer to read
the book and contribute to the discussion. To volunteer, write Cris at cris@bookosphere.net and be sure to include your snail mail address.
Join (contact
Cris) our Bookosphere Ning ( http://bookosphere.ning.com/ )
where participants can share resources pre- and post- book club discussion.
Stay tuned! We’ll read Laurie’s unforgettable first YA novel,
Speak, in October and Penguin Books has already contributed
ten copies for discussants.
See you in the Bookosphere Ning and the Bookhenge!
