What could be more appropriate than to apply Clay Christensen’s theory of disruptive innovation by using a virtual world to bring together educators around the globe to discuss his huge new book, Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns. This book was the buzz at NECC and every other conference this summer. Christensen, a Harvard Business professor, has shaken the business world with his theory of disruptive innovation and now he has applied this powerful theoretical lens to education. What kind of disruption would he recommend for 21st century schools?

You, of course, can read the book and find out. But then you’ll want to talk about this compelling look at what our schools need to do to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

We’ve got an opportunity for you to do just that – and never leave your home.

Join us on Thursday, September 25, at 8 pm EDT, as Bryan Setser, CEO of the North Carolina Virtual Public School, leads a discussion of the book in the 3D online, virtual world of Second Life. We’ll meet with Bryan on USDLC’s beautiful Star Island for this, the first of USDLC's professional book club meetings. All events are free and open to the public in Second Life and Real Life. In Real Life, you can join via Internet radio and chat.

Join the Diigo group to prepare for the discussion at http://groups.diigo.com/groups/disrupting-class-star-book-club

You will see annotated links to interesting articles and interviews about the book. We’ve also begun an interactive discussion guide where you can raise points, questions, and issues that you’d like others to consider as they prepare for the discussion.

Curious about how an event in Second Life works or how you might interact via the Internet radio and chat? Then check out the ARCHIVE for our first Star Teacher event with Cool Cat Teacher Vicki Davis. The technology is the same. You’ll find all the information on www.Literacy2Learn.org
